It is now official what many had taken for granted: Xabi Alonso has been appointed as Real Madrid’s new coach. The club announced it through a statement on its website, in which it informs that the Basque coach has signed a contract until June 30, 2028.
The official presentation will take place on May 26 at 12:30 at the Ciudad Deportiva de Valdebebas. First, president Florentino Pérez will receive Alonso for the traditional signing ceremony. Afterwards, the new coach will address the media in his first appearance before the press as first team coach.
According to the club’s press release, Xabi Alonso is considered one of the most emblematic figures in Real Madrid’s recent history. During his time as a player between 2009 and 2014, he played 236 official matches and won six titles, including a league title, two Copa del Rey trophies and the historic tenth Champions League.
This is not the first time Xabi Alonso has taken charge of a Madrid team. In the 2018-2019 season, he coached the club’s Infantil A, achieving the league championship and the Champions Tournament.
Alonso returns to the club after a brilliant spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he marked a before and after. In just three seasons, he won the first Bundesliga title in the German team’s history, as well as the German Cup and Supercup, cementing his reputation as one of the most promising coaches in European soccer.
