UEFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings Against Athletic Club for San Mamés Incidents

The UEFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Athletic Club following incidents that took place around San Mamés during the second leg of the Europa League Round of 16 match against AS Roma.

The European football governing body is investigating clashes involving radical fans from both teams, as well as the obstruction of evacuation routes in the section allocated to the Italian supporters.

🚨 Incidents Before and After the Match

According to UEFA’s report, the Ertzaintza (Basque police) had to intervene twice to control radical Roma supporters—both before kick-off and after the final whistle.

Additionally, outside San Mamés, there were reports of flares and objects being thrown, an issue that is also included in UEFA’s case. Inside the stadium, stairways in the Italian fan section were blocked, violating stadium safety regulations.

📄 Athletic Club Must Submit Its Defense

Athletic Club now has a set period to submit all relevant documentation to UEFA in response to the charges.

📌 UEFA has stated that a final decision on potential sanctions will be made after reviewing the club’s explanations and the provided evidence.

💰 Previous Sanctions: A €30,000 Fine in the Group Stage

This is not the first time UEFA has penalized Athletic Club for incidents involving its supporters.

On September 26, 2024, during the first match of the Europa League group stage at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, flares were set off inside the venue, resulting in a €30,000 fine for the Basque club.

⚖️ What Penalties Could UEFA Impose?

If UEFA determines that Athletic Club was responsible for the disturbances, the club could face:

🔴 A financial penalty, similar to the one imposed after the Rome match.
🔴 A partial stadium closure for future European competitions.
🔴 A ban on certain identified supporters from attending matches.
🔴 Sporting sanctions in cases of severe repeat offenses.

🔥 Conclusion: Athletic Club Awaits UEFA’s Verdict

The Bilbao-based club must present its defense before UEFA delivers a final ruling. Given its recent disciplinary record, Athletic will aim to reduce potential sanctions, though its history of infractions may influence UEFA’s final decision.
