Madrid’s Metropolitano stadium is positioned as the leading candidate to host the UEFA Champions League final in 2027, following the Spanish government’s approval of the necessary guarantees to support this bid.
The Minister of Education and Sport, Pilar Alegría, announced that the Council of Ministers has given the green light to the guarantees required for Atletico Madrid’s stadium to host the final in 2027. This decision responds to a request for collaboration from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and represents an essential step in the UEFA selection process.
The Metropolitano, inaugurated in 2017 and with a capacity of more than 68,000 spectators, already hosted the Champions League final in 2019, where Liverpool were crowned champions. Now, it competes mainly with the Olympic Stadium in Baku, which hosted the Europa League final that same year.
UEFA’s final decision on the hosting of the 2027 final is expected at the next Executive Committee meeting in September 2025, having been postponed for operational reasons.
With this governmental approval, the Metropolitano reinforces its candidacy and consolidates its position as one of the most solid options to host one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world.
