MiDNI: The New Application for Carrying your ID Card on your Mobile Phone

The Ministry of the Interior in Spain has launched MiDNI, the official application that allows citizens to carry their National Identity Card in digital format on their mobile devices. This new tool seeks to facilitate identification in face-to-face procedures, both in public and private entities. However, it does not replace the physical DNI nor is it valid for traveling abroad.

Main Features of MiDNI

  • Temporary QR Code Generation: The application creates QR codes valid for 60 seconds, allowing for quick identity verification in real time.
  • Shared Information Control: Users can choose which data to display according to the context, improving privacy and security of identification.
  • Security and Privacy: MiDNI does not store personal information in the cell phone, but accesses the data in real time from the National Police servers, guaranteeing the protection of the information.

How to Obtain the Digital ID

  1. Prior Registration: To link the physical DNI to the cell phone, a registration process is required. This can be done online with a card reader and electronic certificate, or in person at the DNI issuing offices.
  2. App Download: The app is available on Google Play for Android devices and the App Store for iOS.
  3. Activation and Verification: Once installed, you must enter your ID number, the support number, establish a secure password and complete the verification process by means of a code sent by SMS.

Warnings and Recommendations

  • Beware of Fake Applications: Fraudulent applications have been detected that attempt to impersonate MiDNI. To avoid risks, it is recommended to download only the official application from the application stores or the website of the Ministry of the Interior.
  • Current Limitations: Although MiDNI facilitates identification in different procedures, for the time being it cannot be used to travel abroad or for online authentication. It is expected that its functionalities will be expanded in the future.

The arrival of MiDNI represents an important step forward in the digitization of personal documentation in Spain, providing citizens with a secure and efficient tool for their daily lives.
